Paris Paralympics 2024: India Creates History, Ends Campaign with Highest Medal Haul

The Paris Paralympics 2024 proved to be a landmark event for India, as the country’s para-athletes delivered an outstanding performance, bringing home a record-breaking 29 medals. This feat marked India's most successful Paralympic campaign ever, surpassing its previous best of 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Record-Breaking Medal Haul

In the Paris Paralympics 2024, India won a total of 29 medals, which included:

  • 7 Gold Medals
  • 9 Silver Medals
  • 13 Bronze Medals

This remarkable tally signifies a significant jump in India's Paralympic achievements. Prior to the Tokyo Paralympics, India had won only 12 medals across 11 Paralympic Games. In just the last two editions, India has brought home a staggering 48 medals, reflecting the growing strength of its para-athlete contingent.

India’s Growing Paralympic Success

India's success in Paris continues the momentum from Tokyo 2020, where the country had sent its largest contingent of 54 para-athletes and won 19 medals. This achievement was a massive leap from previous editions, where India had fewer athletes and less recognition in the global Paralympic arena.

For the Paris Paralympics, India upped its game by sending a larger team of 84 para-athletes. Their hard work, dedication, and world-class preparation paid off, resulting in the highest-ever medal tally for India in a single Paralympic edition.

Historical Comparisons

Before the Tokyo Paralympics, India had only won four gold medals in its entire Paralympic history. However, the last two editions have seen a tremendous improvement. India won 5 gold medals in Tokyo, and then 7 in Paris, showing how Indian para-athletes are now competing at the highest level and excelling across multiple disciplines.

Growth of Indian Para-Athletes

The Paris Paralympics clearly highlighted the growing stature and competitiveness of Indian para-athletes on the global stage. The sports ecosystem in India has evolved in recent years, with increased government support, better facilities, and the encouragement of talented athletes. India's historic performance in the Paris Paralympics demonstrates the potential of para-sports in the country and how far it has come.

This record-breaking performance will serve as an inspiration for the future, as India continues to strengthen its presence in the Paralympic Games, contributing to its overall sporting legacy.
